Overview

We teamed up with our long-standing clients P1 Contractors Ltd for a significant supply of plants worth 150,000 for a new multi-million-pound Scottish conference, exhibition and entertainment venue.

The Challenge

The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) is a recently opened £333m development that incorporates a new arena, P&J Live, conference halls, a subterranean multi-purpose space, two on-site hotels, car parking, public spaces and more.

The complex has been built to exacting environmental standards, making it the most sustainable venue of its type in the UK. Acts due to perform at the arena include Elton John, Rod Stewart and a live version of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

We were tasked with providing many thousands of plants to brighten up the grounds of the arena, working alongside our client P1 Contractors Ltd.

The Solution

Linlithgow-based p1 was responsible for all the soft landscaping on the project, soiling all areas around the complex along with seeding works and tree, shrub and woodland planting around the site.

We supplied the new entertainment complex with almost 40,000 shrubs, 170 three-metre-wide hedera screens, more than 30,000 bare-root transplants and in excess of 400 trees.

Our director, Iain Richardson, visited the site before work started to see for himself the scale of the project and to offer information on planting to the team at p1 Contractors.

The Result

The complex is now officially open and is expected to bring an additional 4.5 million visitors spending around £113m a year to Scotland.

A spokesman for p1 Contractors added that it had been very reassuring to have an experienced partner such as Johnsons to work on such a large-scale project.

Ronnie Blair Contracts Manager for the project on behalf of p1 Contractors Ltd, added: “Having a company such as Johnsons working with us on such a large-scale project has been very reassuring, Iain has taken the time to come up to Scotland and walk the site offering information on the planting to help me with the contract. With the opening of the new complex on the horizon, I am excited about the prospect of returning in a few years to see what it looks like with a bit of maturity something which should be in keeping with the ambitious company we are.
