We were appointed by Principal Contractor ATM Ltd, to supply plants to a £40m regeneration project, the Growth Corridor for Staffordshire County Council.
This new Government-funded scheme aims to reduce congestion and improve safety on a major trunk road linking the East and West Midlands.
We were asked to supply thousands of plants to a new junction on the A50 in Staffordshire as part of The Growth Corridor. The work was completed in two phases: landscaping and planting, then further planting and grass seeding of the entire 80,000 square metre site.
The main goals of the project were to reduce congestion, improve overall road safety, support local businesses and create new jobs in the area.
Complex traffic management arrangements were put in place to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum for road users and businesses including the adjacent JCB factory.
Johnsons supplied 12,000 bare root hedging transplants, including native and non-native varieties for the first phase of this project. More than 7,000 Crataegus monogyna were included in this initial supply.
A joined-up approach was required to meet deadlines and overcome the various challenges this complex scheme presented. All work was completed on time and to the satisfaction of all parties.
The plants were a fantastic addition, bringing life to the major junction in Staffordshire that will make journeys quicker, easier and safer in addition to benefitting local employers and helping to create new jobs in the area.
The mix of varieties perfectly complements the scenery around the area making journeys more enjoyable between the East and West Midlands.
Matt Harston, contracts manager at ATM Ltd, said: “We look forward to seeing the area flourish over the next year as we continue to provide maintenance to the site”
ATM has been involved from the start with the initial de-vegetation and fencing of the site for the principal contractor, Tarmac Group.
“It’s been a great example of all the services that ATM Ltd can provide and the high standard of workmanship we deliver, values that are shared by the team at Johnsons.”
