As curators of large private gardens across Yorkshire, Dean and team were commissioned to design and create a new garden for this substantial Yorkshire residence.
Dean’s brief was to design a garden that would anchor the house to its surroundings and make the most of the views from the garden. The design had to be stunning but not be to labour intensive to manage. The planting had to be playful and colourful to reflect the owner’s eclectic tastes, whilst being a practical and usable space which gave a clear route to their garden studio.
Facing a home with no planting around it and a field with a garden studio placed in it, Dean and team created double herbaceous borders leading the eye away from the house with a small path leading off to the garden studio. The planting, carefully sourced with the help of Johnsons, comes to life in early spring with the early tulips complementing the fresh foliage of the Amelanchier. This progresses through the seasons, culminating with the Miscanthus ‘Morning light’ and a Katsura trees glowing outside of the kitchen and giving off its heady scent of candy floss. Key trees added to the garden include golden Indian Bean trees, Betula ‘Jacquemontii’ and Taxus hedging.
To anchor the house in its surrounds and give the garden a sense of scale, a large herbaceous border was created at the foot of the house with a large path to walk around the garden and enjoy the planting. A path from the studio to the orchard bisects the herbaceous borders and leads the eye from the studio to the distant views.
The client can now easily reach their garden studio and the eye is now drawn out into the wider landscape. To keep the maintenance needs of the garden under control the borders are all edged with paving to make lawn care easier and the planting is all planted into deep grit sand keeping the plants stocky and limiting weed growth.
The house is now nestled into its surroundings and a new revised paint scheme on the house now compliments the soft planting.
