Overview

We were asked to supply plants worth more than £50,000 for two Darwin Escapes luxury holiday developments based in Kent and Somerset.

The Challenge

Well-known holiday park company Darwin Escapes asked us to provide plants for two of its developments in the south of England. Set in acres of glorious countryside, our supply needed to reflect the beauty of the natural surroundings of both parks and help to create a lasting impression for holidaymakers.

A selection of trees and bulbs were required for the developments, at Canterbury Reach Lodge Retreat in Kent – the garden of England and at Cheddar Woods Resort and Spa in Somerset.

The Solution

At Canterbury Reach, we provided 260 trees and more than 9,000 bulbs, including snowdrops (Galanthus Nivalis) and bluebells (Hyacinthoides Non Scripta). More than 8,500 shrubs and herbaceous and 8,000 bare root hedging plants completed the supply, worth £28,000 in total.

At Cheddar Woods, in the Mendip Hills – an area of outstanding natural beauty – we supplied 75 trees including rowan (Sorbus Aucuparia), field maple (Acer Campestre) and silver birch (Betula Pendula) along with almost 10,000 bare root hedging transplants of hawthorn (Crataegus Monogyna), common hazel (Corylus Avellana), blackthorn (Prunus Spinosa) and sweet cherry (Prunus Avium).

Four thousand shrubs of various sizes, from 2L to 10L) were also provided, including 310 10L New Zealand broadleaf (Grisellina Littoralis). The supply was worth £25,000 in total.

The Result

Both developments have been significantly enhanced by the plants we provided for the areas surrounding the individual lodges, pathways and communal areas, helping Darwin Escapes to provide settings that rival those of five-star hotels. We are delighted to play a part in helping these resorts retain the high standards for which they are renowned.

Mark Preston, Director of Hoburne Properties added “we have been delighted by both the quality of the stock and the level of service we have received from Johnsons, and the feedback from our holidaymakers and owners regarding their first impressions of the recently developed areas has been nothing but complimentary. We look forward to working with Johnsons on some exciting projects we have lined up for this coming winter across our parks.
