Overview

We teamed up with award-winning James Marshall Garden Design to supply plants for the transformation of a private courtyard garden in Yorkshire.

The Challenge

We worked closely with our client to supply suitable plants for a north-facing private courtyard garden in Ilkley.

The aim was to create and deliver low maintenance, contemporary garden that would reflect the area and contemporary feel of the house. The owners wanted to create a space that they could use as a hideaway or retreat.

The garden was north-facing and close to the main road, so noise pollution and privacy were issues that needed to be addressed.

The Solution

An important consideration was the types of plants to include. As the property was north-facing, James needed to ensure that they would survive and thrive in an environment that wouldn’t always provide consistent sources of sunlight.

All the plants selected for the garden were therefore chosen for their ability to thrive in a shaded garden and provide the space with texture and interest.

Garden Designer James, selected ferns that mirrored the nearby moorland while the evergreen Magnolia Grandiflora provided year-round greenery. The plants selected were in keeping with flora from the local area while remaining low maintenance. All plants used were evergreen and shade tolerant.

The Result

Our plants helped create green areas within the space and to the great satisfaction of the client, who commented that along with James Marshall Garden Design, Johnsons has “created a beautiful, serene design for our terrace courtyard, one that I really connected with.”

We are extremely proud to be associated with this project and the work was recognised and shortlisted for the Pro Landscaper Awards 2021 in the ‘Design under £30K’ category.
