Overview

Sheffield Hallam University’s latest city centre development is a state-of-the-art academic building designed with sustainability at its core. The project integrates innovative green infrastructure, including blue and green roofs, insulation, paving, planters, and soft landscaping. Johnsons Nurseries, in collaboration with ABG Installs, supplied over 1,700 plants to enhance the environmental and aesthetic aspects of the development.

The Challenge

Creating a sustainable, green space in an urban environment presented several challenges. The university sought to incorporate biodiversity-friendly landscaping that would enhance air quality, promote student well-being, and withstand urban conditions. The project also required a selection of low-maintenance plants that could thrive in rooftop and landscaped settings while contributing to Sheffield Hallam’s sustainability goals.

The Solution

Johnsons Nurseries supplied a carefully curated selection of plants suited to urban landscapes, including Stipa tenuissima, Clematis, Echinacea, Euphorbia, Kniphofia, Salix, Salvia, Sempervivum, Stipa, Carex, and Calamagrostis, alongside a variety of bulbs. These plants were chosen for their resilience, biodiversity benefits, and visual appeal. ABG Installs expertly integrated these plants into the university’s green infrastructure, including its expansive roof terraces, ensuring a seamless and effective installation.

The Result

The completed development now features vibrant, sustainable green spaces that provide a natural retreat for students, staff, and visitors. The integration of biodiversity-enhancing plant life has contributed to improved air quality and created an inviting, eco-friendly atmosphere. Sheffield Hallam University’s investment in sustainable landscaping aligns with its broader environmental responsibility goals, setting a benchmark for future urban developments.

Through this collaboration, Johnsons Nurseries and ABG Installs have demonstrated the importance of green infrastructure in modern urban planning, creating a space that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
