    Competiton: Win £250 worth of plants for your school

    This festive season, we’re excited to host a competition for local primary schools! To celebrate the joy of winter and creativity, we invite students to draw a winter scene. The winning school will receive £250 worth of plants to enhance their school garden, bringing the spirit of the season to life in their outdoor spaces.

    What do you have to do?

    • Download the competition pack here: Winter Scene Pack
    • Draw a winter scene with a Christmas Tree within the white box provided.
    • Get someone to help you label it so we can see what is in it.
    • Get crafty: you can use paints, pens, crayons, magazine cut-outs etc.
    • Ask your teacher or parent/guardian to photograph or scan your entry and email it to marketing@johnsonsnurseries. By Monday 16th December 2024. Make sure to include your name, age and the school you attend.
    • The entries will be judged by internal Johnsons staff.

    What will I win?

    • £250 worth of plants for your school
    • A certificate
    • Ten plants for your own garden

    Those in 2nd and 3rd place will win a plant for their own garden.

    Terms and Conditions 

    • You must be aged 11 or under to enter.
    • The school you are applying from must be within a 15-mile radius from us.
    • The competition will end at midnight on Sunday 15th December 2024.
    • The winner will be announced on Thursday 19th December 2024.
    • Entries may be featured on our social media.
    • The winner and garden will be featured on our website, PR and social media platforms.
    • The Promoter will deliver at a convenient time to the winning school for free.
    • There is only one £250 donation of plants available.
    • The Promoter will not take responsibility for any failure to the plant once the prize is received; replacements cannot be issued.
    • Entires who did not win will not be contacted.
    • In the event of any dispute regarding the terms and conditions, the conduct, results, and any other matters relating to this prize draw, the decision of the Promoter shall be final, and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.

    What’s Included in Our Mix?

    Our standard hedging mix will feature a base of 60% Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and a minimum of four additional native species, such as:

    • Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)
    • Hazel (Corylus avellana)
    • Field Maple (Acer campestre)
    • Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea)
    • Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris)
    • Dog Rose (Rosa canina)
    • Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus)
    • Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

    Varieties are subject to availability and will be supplied in bundles of 25.

    Planting Guidelines

    Our hedging mix is designed for optimal density, with six plants per metre, arranged in a staggered double row to ensure a dense and healthy hedge. Below is a guide to help you estimate the number of plants needed for different hedge lengths:

    • 100m Hedge: 600 plants
    • 250m Hedge: 1,500 plants
    • 500m Hedge: 3,000 plants
    • 750m Hedge: 4,500 plants
    • 1,000m Hedge: 6,000 plants
    • 2,500m Hedge: 15,000 plants

    Use this guide to plan your hedging projects effectively.

    Tree Protection Options

    We offer hedging mixes with or without tree protection. For areas without rabbit fencing, we recommend adding tree guards and canes for optimal growth. Biodegradable options are also available upon request.

    Delivery Information

    As our hedging plants are bare root, delivery depends on seasonal conditions. Shipping begins in mid to late November, with prior notification provided.

    Countryside Stewardship Hedging Requirements

    To qualify for Countryside Stewardship grants, hedging must adhere to specific planting and maintenance guidelines:

    • Plant Density: A minimum of 6 plants per metre, arranged in a staggered double row with 40cm between rows.
    • Planting Season: Must be planted between 1st November and 31st March to meet grant criteria.
    • Weed Management: Keep the hedge weed-free for the first two years to promote healthy growth.
    • Tree Guards and Fencing: Any protective measures, such as guards or fencing, should remain in place until the hedge is fully established.
